About Porter Elementary School

Diversity and history distinguish our school For nearly a century, our school has been the heart of Lincoln Park. We opened our doors as two brand new schools on one campus in 2006-07 to serve a diverse urban community. Ours is one of the larger elementary schools in the district, and one of the more diverse. An exciting mix of cultural backgrounds happens at Porter, where more than half of our students speak another language in the home other than English. While the school population is more mobile than the average elementary school, our neighborhood and our parents are actively involved.

Formerly known as Kennedy Elementary, Porter was rebuilt and now uses two physical locations to alleviate high enrollment and allow students to learn in the most modern and technologically equipped environment possible. Our South Campus opened in 2006 to serve grades pre K, 1, 2 and 3. Our North Campus opened in 2007 for grades K, and 4 through 6. Grades K-3 teachers loop with their students for one year and continue teaching the same group of students as they move to the next grade level. Teachers in grades 3 through 6 team teach mathematics, social studies and science

Porter fosters strong parent and community ties. Throughout the year, the staff offers opportunities for parents to learn how to better support their children academically. We have a drum corps, a spirit dance team, a Parent-Teacher Organization and so many wonderful volunteers all working hard to provide a great education to provide a life full of possibilities to our students.
